In Orlando there is a new challenge coin in town and it’s all thanks to the bright idea of SFC Eric Flores in the U.S. Army’s Recruiting Branch. One day he called U.S. Challenge Coins .com and asked how we would feel about helping him get this project of the ground. The coins were designed then minted so he could get going on getting the recruits a little something to hit Basic with. Sometimes it takes soldiers like SFC Flores to push a little and come up with great ideas to get the soldiers of tomorrow into the Army on the right foot.

What Coins to Collect
This one would seem easy at first glance. However, many new collectors seem stumped in getting started. Many start collecting what they know or what they did for a job and relate it to their collecting. For some though they like to collect something they dream about, perhaps a C-130 Gunship collection. Getting your taste to match your collection can be one of the biggest hurdles out there. Some collectors go for Police coins, Firefighting coins, EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) coins, or anything else…but it’s not always a big area with new coins always coming out.

Minting custom challenge coins is quite a commercial venue many people are diving into. With units in Afghanistan and Iraq trying to make coins for their memories out in the field or units here on the stateside, it’s almost impossible to know where the best deal to have your coins made. Even federal agencies are getting into the challenge coin arena whether it’s to celebrate a new embassy or the Homeland Security Agency. You need to get some serious information so you can start getting into the collecting while there is so much great stuff available. In conjunction with the Challenge Coin Society we are setting standards for the hobby and selling community by releasing the first guides to grading challenge coins. This is not a “Beckett”. These are guides to find coins and be able to identify categories they fall into. Currently no standards exist and we feel it’s only right to establish something for buyers to be able to easily identify coins the are interested in and a true value of them.
